‘Disproportionate tax burden’ blamed as pubs close at rate of two a day

Britain’s pub sector is continuing to shrink, with new figures showing that 161 pubs closed during the first three months of 2026—almost two every day.

According to the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), the closures are being driven not by a lack of customers, but by mounting financial pressures that are eroding profitability across the industry.

The trade body argues that pubs are facing a “disproportionate tax burden” alongside rising operating costs, leaving many businesses unable to survive despite steady trade.

The figures have intensified calls for long-term support for the sector. The BBPA says the closures highlight why the pub-specific business rates relief introduced in April was urgently needed—but warns that temporary measures alone will not be enough to reverse the trend.

Industry leaders are now pushing for broader structural reform, including permanent changes to business rates, cuts to beer duty and VAT, and a reduction in regulatory costs.

For many pub operators, the challenge is one of margins rather than demand. Rising labour costs, energy bills and taxes are squeezing profitability at a time when consumers are still spending cautiously.

Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the BBPA, said many pubs are still attracting customers, but the financial burden placed on the sector is making it increasingly difficult to stay viable.

She warned that continued closures risk damaging more than just businesses. Pubs often act as community hubs, supporting local employment, high streets and social connections—particularly in smaller towns and rural areas.

The industry believes targeted support could help stabilise the sector and encourage investment, preserving venues that play an important role in both the economy and community life.

For now, the figures paint a stark picture: even where demand exists, rising costs and tax pressures are proving too much for a growing number of pubs to absorb.
