Temporary VAT cut aims to make summer days out more affordable

Families are set to receive extra support with the cost of summer activities, as the government introduces a temporary VAT cut on children’s meals, tickets and family attractions.

From 25 June to 1 September 2026, a reduced VAT rate of 5% will apply to certain family-focused spending, helping to lower the cost of days out during the school holidays.

The temporary measure will cover selected children’s meals, children’s admission to theatres, cinemas, concerts, exhibitions and shows, as well as admission tickets to family-friendly attractions such as soft play centres and theme parks.

The government says the change is designed to ease pressure on household budgets at a time when many parents are still feeling the effects of the cost-of-living crisis.

Alongside the VAT reduction, children aged five to 15 will be able to travel for free on local bus services in England throughout August. Ministers say this will make it easier and cheaper for families to get around during the summer break.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the measures were intended to help families spend more time together without being held back by rising costs.

For parents, the changes could make a noticeable difference during the holidays, particularly where travel, meals and admission costs quickly add up.

While temporary, the support reflects growing recognition that family leisure spending is often one of the first areas to be cut when budgets are tight. This summer, the government hopes the measures will help more households enjoy affordable days out.
