HMRC doubles funding for taxpayers needing extra help

Thousands of taxpayers who struggle to manage their tax affairs could soon receive greater support, after HMRC announced a significant increase in funding for specialist advice services.

More than £11 million has been made available through HMRC’s Voluntary and Community Sector Grant Funding Scheme, with the funding aimed at helping organisations support people who need extra assistance navigating the tax system.

The move effectively doubles the level of funding available and reflects growing recognition that some taxpayers face barriers when dealing with HMRC, particularly as more services move online.

From 8 June, voluntary and community sector organisations have been able to apply for grants to provide tailored support to customers who may find it difficult to manage their tax affairs independently. This includes help with understanding tax obligations, accessing HMRC’s digital services and claiming financial entitlements.

The funding is expected to benefit a wide range of individuals, including those with limited digital skills, disabilities, language barriers or complex personal circumstances that can make dealing with tax matters more challenging.

The announcement comes at a time when demand for independent tax support has been rising. As the tax system becomes increasingly digital through initiatives such as Making Tax Digital, concerns have grown that some taxpayers risk being left behind without additional assistance.

Dan Tomlinson, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, said the funding builds on the government's commitment to supporting customers who need the most help. He praised the role played by voluntary sector organisations, which often provide invaluable guidance to individuals struggling with tax-related issues.

For taxpayers facing difficulties, the funding could help improve access to expert advice and reduce the risk of errors, missed entitlements or unresolved tax problems.

The initiative also highlights the important role community organisations play in bridging the gap between HMRC and vulnerable taxpayers, ensuring support remains available for those who need it most.
