The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has called on the new government to prioritise trade, investment and productivity as part of a three-point plan aimed at strengthening the UK economy.
The business group says Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s government must focus on creating the right conditions for firms to invest, expand and create jobs.
According to the BCC, business confidence will be crucial. Companies need greater certainty if they are to commit to long-term investment, adopt new technologies and increase their workforce, but many continue to face barriers that make those decisions harder.
The organisation is therefore urging the government to take steps that encourage investment and reduce unnecessary costs and regulatory burdens on businesses.
A second priority is the UK’s planning system. The BCC has called for a fully funded, multi-year workforce plan for planning services, arguing that greater capacity is needed to unlock development, support job creation and strengthen local economies.
Infrastructure also features prominently in the plan. The BCC wants the government to accelerate the delivery of major projects and improve opportunities for businesses to participate in supply chains, helping more firms benefit from public and private investment.
The group argues that faster infrastructure delivery, improved access to supply chains and a more supportive business environment could help maximise the economic returns from investment across the country.
Taken together, the BCC’s recommendations reflect a wider call from businesses for greater certainty and fewer obstacles to growth.
For the new government, the message is clear: strengthening trade, encouraging investment and improving productivity will be central to creating the conditions in which UK businesses can grow.
